10 Reasons to Stop Selling on eBay

July 21st, 2008 joe

Millions of people are using eBay these days. Surprisingly, you might be better off not selling on eBay. First, you may receive phishing scam emails from other eBay users and this may get you into trouble if you respond. Another big factor is time, that is, auctions take time to list, time to watch, and then time to complete the transaction! Selling fees are problematic because unless you’re only selling high ticket items, listing fees can really cut into your profits.

There’s more. Many bidders “snipe” auctions at the last few seconds and thus a fair market price may not be realized on your auction. Furthermore, some sellers even bid against their bidders in hopes of raising the auction price. Clearly this does not happen in other forms of retail sales. Additionally, you have to use a postal service for sending packages to customers, and this alone invites all sorts of fraud where customers can claim a package did not arrive and ultimately get a free item out of the deal by requesting a refund.

Buyer dispute claims, non-paying bidders, and chargebacks are also big problems with eBay sales. The latter being where a customer pays with his or her credit card, finds a loophole where you cannot defend yourself in the sale and essentially gets their money back while keeping your item. Last but not least, fraudulent payments are rampant on eBay. Like chargebacks, payments can be reversed while the customer keeps a free item. If you are contemplating wholesale sales for instance, perhaps eBay is not the way to go for you if you plan on avoiding all of these headaches.
